You now know that the inside of our Earth is divided into layers.If we are talking about the layers based on composition, there are 3; crust, mantle, core.
If we are talking about the layers based on physical properties, there are 5; lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, inner core.
You also learned that it is not possible to drill to the center of the Earth. Even if we had a drill that was long enough, it would melt way before reaching Earth's core.
Since it is not possible to drill to the center of the Earth, how do you think we know that the inside of the Earth is divided into layers? Think about this question for a minute. Then, take a guess at what the answer might be.

Scientist know we have layers in the earth and a core because if there were an earth quake in california then whatever is on the other side of the earth of california will gave an earth quake to because the vibrations would just go straight through the earth but since we have a core the core obsorbs the vibrations and stops ot from transffering to the other side if th earth.

Scientist know we have layers such as the crust, mantel, and core because if there was a earth quake in the south part of Flordia the northern part of Flordia would not feel the vibrations as much. The northern part of Flordia would not feel the vibrations as much becasue the core obsorbes the vibrations to stop them from transfering the vibrations from the southern to the northern part of Flordia.

ReplyDeleteI think sciencetists deturmin the earths spheres by looking at a sismagraph when an eart quake happens on two oppisite sides of the earth. For excample say a earth quake happens in china and the sismac waves are soposed to travel to the other side of the earth. But they dont because sicentists have discovered that the earths core is made of solid iron. This explains why the sismac waves do not travel through the core or center of the earth.
ReplyDeleteI think scientists can tell that there are layers in the earth because earthquakes. They obviously know about the crust because they can study that directly,but the mantle and core were most likely discovered differently. When earthquakes occur, the seismic waves can be transfered throughout the earth, this can only happen if there is a layer of liquified substance in the earth. On the other side of the earth, the seismic waves are not transfered because there must be something NOT liquid in the center to block them, this is the core.That is how scientists most likely discovered the earths layers
ReplyDeleteI think scientist could tell there are layers by earthquakes. They know that the crust is what they stand on. When earthquakes happen waves go all out through the earth and we can feel it. Earthquakes must come from the middle of the earth like volcanoes erupt it shakes the earth. The lava moves around a lot and makes the earth move from the middle.

ReplyDeleteThe scientists know that the earth is divided into layers because they can measure earthquakes. The scientist would watch an earthquake go through the earth and measure how the wave stregnth changed after hitting a layer and then would eventually stop by hitting something solid (the core). Then these scientist test many different materials and see how different they react to each time it hits it like every time the wave strength changed and if it is similar to the material they tested can tell that that layer is made up of that different material than the one on top of it and what type of material it is made up of. And if it is divided by different materials that would make them "layered"

If the earth did not have multiple layers there would be nothing to absorb like Chase said, so the vibrations from an earthquake would travel through the earth and would be felt all over the earth, instead of in a particular area.

ReplyDeleteI think scientist know that the earth is made up of manny layers because of earthquakes and tectonic plate movement. When earthquakes Occur vibrations travel from one side of the earth to the other side. when scientist reshearch data on the vibrations they can calculate the amount of energy transfered from one side to another. If the vibrations travel directly through the earth and are recorded scientist will find that there will not be as much energy on the other side of the earth as scientist would think. The only resonalble answer to this mystery is that somthing in the middle of the earth (such as the core) is blocking the energy that is being transfered. Also scientist can conclude that the earth is made up of several layers because what would the tectonic plates lay on instead of the crust and the core. Scientists can conclude that there are layers in the earth from manny other resources, i have only listed a couple. that is most likely how scientist discoved earths several layers.

ReplyDeletei think the scientists know what the inside of the earth looks like because when valcanoes erupt the lava doesnt come from the crust because the crust isnt made of lava so it must come from the mantle. another reason is that when we have earthquakes the the seismic waves travel through one part of the earth and not the whole world. the core blocks the seismic waves from getting to other parts of the earth so we know that there is a core(earths magnetic feild) which absorbs the waves so the dont cause the whole earth to shake.

The scientists studying earth canalso monitor the layers by watching earthquakes and volcanoe eruptions.

ReplyDeleteI think scientists know what the inside of the Earth looks like because if volcanos erupt magma, there has to be somewhere from where the magma comes from. Also, if the entire Earth was made of crust, if an earthquake occured in the United States, people in China would feel the vibratations on the other side of the Earth. So, there has to be something in the middle of the Earth that stops the vibratations from happening on the other side. Since scientists know that the composition of the mantle is similar to silly putty from the magma that erupts from volcanos, it is most likely that the silly putty like composition would absorb the vibrations.
